The 9 Best BBQ Places in Wichita (A Local Guide)

best bbq wichita kansas

Some say that America is divided by geography; others say it’s divided by barbecue.

But here in the Sunflower State, we don’t subscribe to that division. No, we say, “Come one, come all!” There’s space for everyone’s barbecue tastes here, from spicy to sweet lovers alike.

So, whether you’re a fan of Texan barbecue, Carolina heat, or that sweet Kansas City sauce, Doo-Dah city has got your back.

And yes—in this article, we’re staying loyal to local, per usual!

Map of the Best BBQ Places in Wichita, Kansas

Bite Me BBQ

Located on the south end of Old Town, Bite Me BBQ is one of the most famous barbecue joints in all of Wichita. Maybe even in all of Kansas!

But this high praise is completely warranted. Bite Me BBQ is known not only for their fall-off-the-bone meats, but also their fantastic service. Their mac and cheese is some of the cheesiest in town, and let’s just say, Bite Me ain’t known for being healthy. They’re known for being good. It’s comfort food at its best!

On top of their excellent meat selection, Bite Me BBQ also has a pickle bar and a spicy Bloody Mary that are both legendary.

Protip: Follow their Facebook and you might just catch one of their Rib Special promotions: a full slab of St Louis-style ribs for only $20. That’s right, baby!

Even though Bite Me BBQ transferred ownership in 2019, the quality has remained the same. They’re here to stay, and so are their loyal customers.

Plus, my good pal Rich loves the ribs here: tender, juicy, and slightly marbled. What more do you need to know?

Two Brothers BBQ

Two Brothers BBQ is a landmark within the barbecue community here in Wichita.

Although their menus vary per location, one thing remains the same: every single scrap of meat is smoked on-site! These brothers love their hickory smoke, and they’ve got the technique down pat.

The brisket is delicious on its own, but for those looking to beef it up, try their brisket chili. Moist and smoky, people. Moist and smoky!

In my younger years, I could often be found devouring their barbecue wings alongside a nice, cool Coca-Cola. Those were the days!

Sadly, Two Brothers had to close their third location due to pandemic-related losses, but we will continue to support them at the other two! So, get going—it’s time for a barbecue dinner!

B&C BBQ

To this day, B&C BBQ remains a Kansas tried-and-true classic. Using the same smoker founder Carey Maurer built with his dad over 25 years ago, every meat is smoked to perfection. That flavor is unbeatable.

Their most popular venture is their barbecue lunch buffet, which occurs six out of seven days of the week. There, you’ll have access to all-you-can-eat meats, a tossed salad bar, as well as a full menu.

Prices vary depending on the meat and quantity, but it’s always a good deal at B&C BBQ. I’ve heard mixed reviews about their chicken, however, so unless you’re desperate for it, I’d stick with their classic, Texas-style ribs and brisket.

This former boutique art store has a large, open space topped off with a beautiful chandelier. It’s perfect if you have a large group, just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time!

And yes, they cater!

Delano Barbecue Company

Established in 1994, Delano Barbecue Co is a family favorite. With a wood smoker and generous portion sizes, it’s hard not to love this local barbecue haven.

The Carolina-Style Pulled Pork sandwich, featuring a generous helping of their spicy cole slaw, is my personal favorite. But I’ve heard great things about their hot links, too—just the right amount of spice.

What everyone agrees on, however, is the fries. They have the best in town! Always fresh cut and crisp—not a soggy fry in sight!

If you’re looking to save, I highly recommend checking out their daily specials ahead of time and planning your visit around them. A four-rib dinner with two sides plus Texas Toast for less than 15 bucks? Saturday can’t come soon enough!

There’s always a variety of sauces on the table, so get ready to experiment! Come on down for casual, yet finger-licking good barbecue.

The Angry Elephant

Bring on the spice! Located within the Augustino Brewing Co, the Angry Elephant has quickly become a fan favorite. So much so that the owner just opened a new restaurant! We’re all about staying #loyaltolocal in Wichita.

This restaurant is one of the few barbecue places in town that combines traditional American smokers with Mexican flavors. The brisket tacos and smoked pork tacos are two beautifully delicious examples of said combination. Did I mention the delectable 7-pepper brisket? Give it a shot next time; you can thank me later.

But it’s not just about the meat at this place. Their corn fritters are the talk of the town, as well as their giant, stacked milkshakes. Who knew a slice of cheesecake could fit on top of a milkshake?

Although some people say service has been spotty, I’ve yet to have a negative experience there. Believe me when I say, Angry Elephant has got it going on!

When Pigs Fly BBQ

Frankly, you can’t go wrong with When Pigs Fly BBQ. An adorable couple founded this restaurant in 2010, and it’s only become more popular over the years.

This family-friendly restaurant is chock full of super sweet staff who genuinely want to make your meal the best it can be.

And if you don’t care about the service, then you’ll be pleased to know the barbecue is also to die for. We’re talking homemade mac and cheese with burnt ends, never-dry ribs, and jalapeño and cheddar sausages. I’m getting hungry thinking about it.

This beloved Wichita staple is simply a classic. No doubt about it! Sure, it’s not as experimental or edgy as others. But who cares about that when the barbecue is this good?

Julius Rib Cage

The owner, Mike, runs this show from behind the cash register. Since it’s a one-man show, you can’t make any alterations to the menu items, but what he does, he does well. (Trust me, you won’t want to change a thing.)

This joint is all about the dry rub. Sure, you can add his sauce on top, but it’s not necessary when it comes to Julius Rib Cage.

That being said, the hot BBQ sauce is a must-try. It’ll make you sweat, but it never sacrifices the flavor.

Now, the actual dining experience is not the fanciest. Consider it a casual outing—put on that ratty, old t-shirt and go visit the barbecue man.

Crutch BBQ

I’ll admit that Crutch BBQ is not the best barbecue in town. However, the ambiance and vibe make up for what their meats may be lacking compared to some of the others on this list. Besides, this place is perfect for a date night or a nicer outing with friends.

This Texas-style barbecue slathers their meat in a house-made coffee rub. If that wasn’t enough flavor for you, they also have four sauces that encapsulate the many flavors of American barbecue. They’ve got the Crutch Mild, Crutch Hot, Alabama Sauce, and their Carolina Sauce. The Alabama is a tangy white sauce, while the Carolina is mustard-based.

If you’re really feeling the meat that night, I highly recommend trying the Sampler, so you get a bit of everything. The sides are delicious too: the baked beans are full of shredded meat, and their mac and cheese has a slight kick at the end of every bite.

Crutch BBQ is all about the vibes, so grab your honey and head down Rock Road.

Local Flavor: Grill and Tapworks

Last but not least, we have Local Flavor! Just like Angry Elephant, they mash Mexican flavors with barbecue and other traditional, American foods. Plus, a whole lot of locally brewed beers.

Their smokey fried thighs are an absolute must! So juicy, yet so crisp. And I know the smoked brisket cheesesteak may not be the healthiest, but my stomach doesn’t seem to mind.

On top of their excellent flavors, Local Flavor makes the effort to source from local growers! So, you know the food you’re eating there is as fresh as can be.

And, if you need further proof, let it be known that this is my father’s favorite barbecue restaurant in all of town. So, there you have it, folks!
