The 9 Best Burgers in St. Louis (A Local’s Opinion)

best burgers st louis

I’ve had a lot of burgers during my time in St. Louis, to the point that when I was writing this article, it was quite challenging to come up with a normal-sized list!

(What can I say, nothing satisfies my hunger quite like a big, juicy burger and fries!)

Thankfully, after a few days of contemplation, I think I’ve narrowed it down. Here are my top picks for the 9 best burgers in St. Louis.

Best smashed burger: Layla

Whenever my husband and I can’t figure out where we should have dinner, Layla is always our go-to. This restaurant serves burgers and shawarma, which might seem like an odd combination, but they honestly knock both of these cuisines out of the park. I can’t decide which I like more, burgers or Mediterranean, but that’s probably why Layla is one of my favorites.

Layla’s burger selection is vast, but one of my favorites is the Corporate Clown. With two prime smash patties, cheddar, lettuce, homemade pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun, this is essentially their take on a Big Mac (but it’s way better, in my opinion!). Order your burger with sweet potato waffle fries; the seasoning on top is incredible, and I’ve been trying to replicate it at home for years to no avail!

Best drive-in burger: Hi-Pointe Drive-In

Hi-Pointe isn’t just a burger joint, it’s an iconic St. Louis destination. Located in the historic Hi-Pointe neighborhood, this spot has been around since the 1980s. Today, this restaurant serves a diverse selection of burgers, sandwiches, and shakes, and is definitely a must-visit while in St. Louis.

While you’re at it, check out some of Hi-Pointe’s sister restaurants (which also happen to be some of my favorites), including Cyrano’s, Chicken-Out, and Sugarfire. The family who runs these eateries truly knows how to do the restaurant business!

Most popular: Stacked STL

While Stacked Burger Bar STL offers plenty of specialty burgers, this eatery is the best place in town to build your own burger. Choose from different types of buns, meats, cheeses, veggies, sauces, and various toppings to create your own masterpiece. There are even vegetarian and gluten-free options, making this spot an excellent place for those who have dietary restrictions.

Best value: Carl’s Drive-In

When a restaurant is cash-only, you know it’s good! The menu is straightforward, only offering burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries, onion rings, and ice cream drinks. As a bonus, this joint is highly affordable, so you can order a lot of food for a low price!

This Route 66-themed American diner is a great spot to check out if you’re in the mood for classic American food.

Best happy hour: Basso

I’ve written about Basso in our article about the best Italian in St. Louis, and as crazy as it sounds to have burgers and pasta at the same place, everything on Basso’s menu is truly delicious!

Whenever I’m here, it’s usually during happy hour. My go-to happy hour order is a burger, truffle fries, and an Aperol spritz. Basso’s burger is super tender and comes with fontina cheese, giardiniera relish, crispy onions, marrow butter, and a garlic aioli that puts it over the top! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

P.S. – The happy hour cocktails are excellent, too.

Best gourmet burger: The Block

If a restaurant has an on-site butcher, you know the burgers will be good! All of the meat on The Block’s menu is farm fresh and grass-fed, which really gives this place an edge over some of the other burger joints in town.

The Block Burger is an 8-ounce beef patty with white cheddar, homemade pickles, and garlic herb fries (which are some of my favorite fries in town!).

And if you want to take some meat home to cook for dinner that week, feel free to check out the cuts under the glass counter on the way out.

Best patio: Circle 7 Ranch

Everything on the menu at Circle 7 Ranch is delicious, but the burgers are especially great! A local menu favorite is the G.O.A.T., a double burger topped with avocado, onion straws, goat cheese, cheddar, and spicy honey barbecue sauce. If you order this, you won’t leave hungry.

I especially like Circle 7 because of the large outdoor covered patio, which is a lovely spot to grab dinner or drinks on a warm summer evening. With a vast menu, a great happy hour, tons of indoor and outdoor seating, and even an impressive dessert menu, there’s something here for everyone.

Best burgers and cocktails: Retreat Gastropub

For great cocktails, excellent burgers, and a vibrant hangout, Retreat Gastropub does not disappoint! Located in the trendy Central West End, this modern American pub and cocktail bar serves an incredible Farmhouse Burger, which comes with two patties, candied bacon, a sunny-side-up egg, and cheese sauce on a brioche bun.

Make sure to order parmesan-garlic fries as a side with one of their housemade dipping sauces, like ranch, fry sauce, or garlic aioli.

I can’t mention Retreat without talking about their cocktails. Many of my friends love the Golden State, which features gin, curacao, coconut, turmeric, ginger, and lemon. Personally? I enjoy their pineapple daiquiri, (mainly because I love pineapple) but also because it is just the right amount of sweetness. However, you can’t go wrong with anything on the cocktail menu!

For an Irish pub feel: Seamus McDaniel’s

Seamus McDaniel’s is one of my favorite Irish pubs in the Dogtown neighborhood, mainly because their burgers are top-notch. With 10-ounce Angus patties, these burgers are massive, but due to how delicious they are, I don’t think you will have any problems finishing one off on your own.

This pub has many burgers to choose from, but personally, I like their classic cheeseburger, which I always order with cheddar cheese. If you want a St. Louis spin on a classic burger, order yours with provel!
