Why These are The 6 Best Gift Shops in St. Louis

best gift shops st louis

Say what you will, but I die on the hill that giving your friends a little package with a ribbon is the best feeling in the whole world.

I love gift giving. Maybe it stems from crawling my way through grad school on minimum wage and years worth of gifts just being my sparkling presence, but I will never feel happier than when a friend cries out “No!” in glee when they unwrap a package.

And when I get to explain that the beloved gift came from a small local business? I swear, I could ride that high for a year.

Here are my personal favorite places in St. Louis to buy that perfect trinket or object of affection for your loved ones.

Best Fair Trade: Zee Bee Market

Shopping is hard, guys. I get it. You want to not only buy something beautiful and clear of intent and thought, but you want it to be a not-morally poor choice. One place that you know you can buy anything from, without having to second guess where it was made and if the labor was adequately paid for, is Zee Bee Market.

As a Fair Trade and sustainable products based shop, all of their items — from the jewelry to the kitchen ware to the knitted blankets and everything in between — are made and bought fairly and ethically. Centered on offering socially conscious shopping to the customers, the business boasts not only its fair trade merchandise but fair wages and working environment for its employees.

With two locations, one in South Grand and the other just outside the city proper in Maplewood, they offer a huge variety of items and a guarantee of no buyer’s remorse.

Best Browsing: Urban Matters

Sometimes, you just want to wander until something speaks to you. Something definitely will yell at you here at Urban Matters.

First opened in 2014, this women-owned business is a fan favorite for many St. Louis locals. In fact, they’re so popular that they opened a second location just a few doors down from their original location back in 2020, expanding their offerings.

Their merchandise consists mostly of independent designs and locally/regionally hand crafted goods. Though their website doesn’t offer a close look at what they sell, their Instagram is like the windows into the soul of the store — here, you can see all of the beautifully handcrafted jewelry, the locally made home decor, and more.

When prompted, the staff describe the store as having a “Lifestyle collection”. Their first location offers mostly home goods and kitchenware; their second location, just a few steps away, offers artisanal jewelry, clothing, and a kids’ section.

Located in the heart of South Grand, Urban Matters is the perfect post-lunch place to stroll to and grab a few things — or maybe more — to give anyone of any age the perfect gift.

Best Local Artists: Union Studio

Union Studio is a locally owned shop featuring the work of over 140 St. Louis artists, and I want to risk it all and go bankrupt every time I walk inside.

With two locations and a forever rotating list of artists, there’s never a bad time to stop into one of these shops — and there’s never a time I’ve gone in wanting something and not found it. If I’m in a pinch, I know that one of their fabulous gift sets will work for any scenario. They have this Honeycomb Gift Set with local honey, the cutest little honeycomb plate, and a bee towel, and it has literally saved my ass when I’ve forgotten to merge my multiple calendars.

Union Studio also offers a collection of STL themed gifts if you’re wanting to give something that reminds them of home — or, as I use it, as a sure-fire manipulation tactic to convince my friends to move here. Plus, with a gift registry option at both locations, there’s no reason for this place to not be a one-stop shop for all your gift giving needs.

  • Address 2: 8157 Big Bend Blvd St. Louis, MO 63119

Best for the Creatives: STL Art Supply

Each year before school began, my mother would take my siblings and I to the store to buy our school supplies. This was, if you can imagine it, a day that I awaited like my brother waited for Christmas. This was it. The day of all days. The glory of all glory. The pencils of all pencils would soon be mine.

When I was about to enter the sixth grade, my mother took me separately. She pulled up to the store, put a hand on my shoulder, and said, “I love you, but I cannot watch you spend an hour picking out pens. Call me when you’re ready.”

All this to say — I love stationary.

So you can imagine that when I walked into St. Louis Art Supply, I nearly passed out. Wall to wall products, there’s everything you can ever imagine. Of course, there’s the beautiful paints and canvases and box sets, but there’s also so much stationary.

Even just thinking about it now, I might tear up. If you are an art or journaling aficionado, or you have a friend who is, this shop will make finding a gift the easiest it has ever been. If you’re looking for a gift for me, it’s the peony flower wax sealing kit. She’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Best Flowers: Urban Buds

Sometimes, the old adages stand true, and the best thing you can give another person — or yourself — is a beautiful bouquet of flowers. While there are many different places in St. Louis you can order your flowers from, I’ll always be getting mine from Urban Buds.

Family owned and operated, this small farm is the absolute epitome of what you imagine when you think of flower farmers. Focusing on “locally grown, not flown”, the farm offers over seventy types of flowers, and produces beautiful bouquets that they sell through their online service and at the local Tower Groves Farmer’s Market during its Spring through Fall seasons.

I mean, they have their own bees. They offer tours of the farm. And they make me believe in true love in that sweet parasocial way that only a beautiful About Me website page can produce.

I cannot implore you enough — if you’re looking for a gift for someone special, a delivery of these flowers is the way to go.

Best For The Pet Lover: Four Muddy Paws

If you know me, you’re rolling your eyes. And that’s fine! I don’t care! I love my dog, and I love him proudly!

Yes, my dog gets his own line in my budget spreadsheet. Yes, he also gets a morning treat and a monthly present. I love him.

And there’s nowhere I love buying his gifts from than Four Muddy Paws. This small business was started back in 2004 when the owners, a couple who had recently adopted a small dog, realized there was no place that featured holsitic and nutritious foods and treats.

They now offer a wide variety of healthy foods, a self-service dog wash, and a variety of incredibly adorable toys. They even offer homemade birthday cakes and treats that are made specifically for your pet. It’s honestly the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.
