Well, here in Wichita, we’ve got approximately 9 of those restaurants. Ready to know what they are?

Today I’m sharing my picks for all the best Mexican food spots in Wichita, Kansas!

Molino’s Cuisine

Molino’s is the American dream come to life. Mario and his wife, Mara, founded Molino’s around a decade after he first moved to Wichita from Monterrey, Mexico. After enrolling in English classes at WSU, he worked his way up the ladder at various Mexican restaurants around town.

Mario’s success story and genuine kindness have made Molino’s an infectiously joyful place to eat. And I know all of Wichita agrees with me; it’s one of the most popular restaurants in town for a reason!

Mario’s commitment to community is also commendable: on Mondays, kids can eat for 99 cents with one adult meal purchase.

Personally, the margaritas and elote are two of my favorites. And, if we raise our voices loud enough, Mario may add mole back to the menu!

Molino’s Taqueria

Mario’s success at Molino’s Cuisine inspired him to open a spin-off restaurant, the Taqueria!

This restaurant reminds me of a better, more local version of Chipotle. The set-up is build-your-own meal, which makes for a quick and easy restaurant overall.

I especially love their piratas. These giant tacos are made from tortillas pressed right in front of you. As fresh as can be!

This is a great restaurant for lunch, hanging out with friends, or grabbing a meal without breaking the bank. Here’s to Mario!

El Gordo

If you keep traveling down Central, you’ll find this little restaurant tucked off to the side. The inconspicuous sign (a theme for the best Mexican restaurants in town) does not do justice to what awaits inside.

Is it fast food? For sure. But is it also genuine Mexican food that’ll leave your belly full and won’t hurt your pockets? 100%.

Yes, I know I’m waxing poetic, but nothing can cure the Monday blues like an El Gordo burrito. I’m partial to their adovada burritos or even chimichangas, but they’re most well-known for their breakfast burritos.

Everything is under $10, too, which makes it all the more golden in my heart. I’m salivating just thinking about that marinated pork…

Taqueria El Fogon

I will never forget the first time I went to Taqueria El Fogon. I had $7 in my pocket, and I was the only one in the restaurant speaking English. When my food arrived, I about melted in my seat. Taqueria El Fogon is the ultimate, hole-in-the-wall gem.

Of course, Taqueria El Fogon is cash only, but never fear. These insanely cheap prices won’t have you craving your credit card anytime soon. That $7 bought me handfuls of deliciousness, and I’m sure it’ll do the same for you.

Their al pastor tacos are truly the talk of the town. In fact, many believe (myself included) that this taqueria has the best tacos in all of Wichita. They even have lengua tacos!

If you’re looking for authentic, Mexican staples, Taqueria El Fogon is the spot for you.

El Viejito Mexican Restaurant

I love this restaurant not just for the food, but for the space itself. There’s color everywhere! It’s pink and green, with painted booths and murals spread across the walls. It’s honestly the brightest and boldest restaurant I’ve ever been to.

This mom-and-pop restaurant was founded by a man from Cuernavaca, Mexico. Roberto brought authenticity and amazing salsas right here to Doo-Dah City. This place is family-friendly, fun, and chock full of dishes that’ll make your belly full. Trust me, you won’t want to stop eating.

I highly recommend trying the huarache, a dish you don’t see often here in Wichita. It’s delicious and filling and something I think about a little too much.

Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant

This West-side beauty has become a Wichita staple for good reason. Their bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers will make you sweat, but in a really good way. Need to clear out those sinuses? You know where to go.

Check out their chicken mole for that authentic, chocolate-y, savory flavor or their fan-favorite California Carnitas. I prefer the Chile Relleno: a gooey yet crunchy stuffed poblano pepper served with pork carnitas. I mean, come on!!

Taqueria la Chona

They’ve got chicken mole, they’ve got ceviche, they’ve got lengua and tripa! No doubt, this is authentic and delicious Mexican food, right at your fingertips.

Taqueria la Chona has only been open for a few years, which makes its high-standing all the more impressive. They’re bringing a taste of Jalisco straight to Wichita. The beef birria melts in your mouth, and the street tacos are a textural delight.

If you’ve been itching to travel but can’t afford the ticket, come to Taqueria la Chona and you’ll be transported to Jalisco in an instant.

Best for sweets: Paleteria La Reyna

Paleteria La Reyna offers a full menu featuring elote and pollo sope, but the true feature of this restaurant is the ice cream! Seriously!

Paleteria La Reyna has over 30 ice cream flavors in their ice cream bar, and goodness gracious, they are so worth a visit. They were even recognized by Food Network as having the best ice cream in Kansas!

You want something fruity? Try the mango, coconut, or fresa. They’ve got all the classic flavors, too: vanilla, chocolate, galleta, and coco. On top of this, they have popsicles, aqua con frutas, shaved ice raspas, and sundaes. Talk about a brain freeze!

Los Pinos

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve driven by this place and seen cars waiting in the drive-through. Many locals swaer Los Pinos has the best tacos in town, but I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

The service is crazy fast and efficient—don’t be expecting any dawdling or drawn-out conversations about your weekend. But the food and price make up for it! Each taco is priced between $1.90-$2.75. No complaints from me!

In particular, their tripe tacos are famously good, as are their al pastor. I don’t really know what you’re waiting for. It’s time to eat!
