The 8 Best Chinese Food Restaurants in Grand Rapids (Local Opinion)

best Chinese food grand rapids mi

If we were to do a March Madness bracket of the world’s great cuisines, I think Chinese food would be a 1 seed.

Put them up against a culinary lightweight like the Netherlands, and Chinese food would win by a landslide. (Guys! My grandparents were Dutch. I’m not throwing shade, I was raised on black licorice and windmill cookies.)

From dim sum to dumplings, from fried rice to hot and sour soup, Chinese food is a juggernaut.

Snap open your fortune cookie. Your fortune reads: a delicious meal awaits you. Just eat at these restaurants, and you’ll experience the best Chinese food in Grand Rapids.

The best Chinese food to eat in a park: Gaslight Kitchen

Nestled in EGR’s Gaslight Village, Gaslight Kitchen is my go-to for Chinese food. The staff here go above and beyond to ensure you have the best dining experience possible.

What to order? Start with some egg rolls and crab rangoons. Their soups also can’t miss.

From there, Gaslight Kitchen’s menu diverges from standard Chinese menus. Pick your protein and cooking method (ie Hunan, sweet and sour, etc.), then choose your veggies and (optional) nuts. Boom. You’ll be blissfully stuffing your face with top-notch Chinese food in no time.

Eat in the restaurant, which is modern and tidy, or walk the short distance to Collins Park and enjoy your meal al fresco while you overlook majestic Reed’s Lake.

The best Chinese food on the NW side: China Chef

If you’re from the North West side, I don’t need to tell you about China Chef. Affordable? Absolutely. Tasty? Extremely.

If you’re eating inside, you’ll get Chinese diner vibes. Their Mongolian Beef is absolutely legendary in GR. It is sweet, crunchy, sticky ecstasy. The sesame chicken is also delicious, and you can never go wrong with China Chef’s fried rice.

Go to China Chef on a first date. Tell the person you’re courting that this is Grand Rapids’ hidden gem for Chinese food. Play your cards right, and I bet you’ll score a second date.

The best Chinese food for lunch: Chopstick House

A lot of my fellow Grand Rapidians would argue Chopstick House makes the best Chinese food in town. I’m not gonna argue with them.

Chopstick House certainly provides exceptional value, particularly at lunchtime. A main dish, fried rice, and crab rangoons will set you back less than ten bucks. It’ll blow the pants off whatever chain burger joint you were going to grab lunch from.

Their menu, like many Chinese joints, is longer than War and Peace. Grab a house signature dish if you’re having trouble deciding.

The best Chinese food in East Hills: Red Bowl

Red Bowl occupies the spot that used to be Marie Catrib’s, a restaurant whose Lebanese spin on brunch and lunch was absolutely groundbreaking and revelatory for GR. Sadly, Marie passed away, and the restaurant ended up dissolving. Times change.

Marie Catrib’s left big shoes to fill, and Red Bowl fills them admirably.

Start your meal right with fried dumplings and spring rolls. Their sweet and sour chicken is divine – it makes the stuff from the mall food court taste like it was run through a horse.

Located in the East Hills Center (of the Universe), Red Bowl is a quick walk to Less Travelled, Brewery Vivant, and The Meanwhile. Live your best life and grab a nightcap at any of these fine establishments.

The best Chinese food in downtown Grand Rapids: Beijing Kitchen

Beijing Kitchen’s beef with snow peas is a carnivore’s delight. It’s a sticky sweet, beefy dish, and the snow peas add a delightful crunch. Scoop it in some fluffy, steamy white rice – it’s important to eat your carbs.

Other highlights include the kung po platter, which is kinda like Chinese food’s version of surf and turf. Jumbo shrimp and fresh scallops tossed with chicken and veggies, tossed in a rich brown sauce. Yes, please!

The best authentic Chinese food in Grand Rapids: First Wok

If you’re looking for authentic Chinese food, head to First Wok.

They sell alcohol, too. (Many Chinese joints around here don’t sell booze. They’re mom-and-pop affairs, and the cost of a liquor license is prohibitively expensive.)

The beef with garlic sauce is a personal favorite. General Tso’s is a Chinese food staple that First Wok absolutely crushes. Pair it with a Mai Tai for the perfect treat to tame the General’s spicy heat.

The best Chinese food on the Beltline: Golden Wok

Golden Wok is a family-owned and operated joint that’s smack dab in the center of Knapp’s Corner. So it’s the perfect choice if you’re looking to score some Chinese food after a movie or a day of shopping on the East Beltline.

And the food’s so good, you might be inspired to hit up the Meijer on Knapp’s afterward, buy yourself a wok, and try your hand at cooking up your own Chinese food.

Forget everything you know about lo mein and try Golden Wok’s. You’ll be texting friends the exploding head emoji.

Better news: they’ve got a full bar if an adult beverage is calling your name.

The best Chinese food on Alpine: Three Happiness

If you’re slogging your way across Alpine for a new car, groceries, a new outfit – whatever – treat yourself to a break. Treat yourself to Three Happiness.

Wow your boo (or your bestie) with the flaming appetizer for two. Then order up the orange chicken, which might be the tastiest in Grand Rapids.
