The 10 Best Spots for a Boody Mary in Grand Rapids

best bloody mary grand rapids mi

Bloody Marys are of those drinks that have no business being so delicious. It’s like something a hungover frat guy threw together because his pantry was depleted. Tomato juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, celery, some olives, and vodka?

Recite this list of ingredients to a child, each ingredient more offensive than the last. Watch their face grow sour.

But that hungover frat guy (or whoever first invented the bloody mary) did a great service to humanity – the oddball ingredients come together to make a delicious ambrosia. And nothing hits like a weekend bloody mary.

Grand Rapids has a ton of great spots to satisfy your craving for a bloody. Here are some of my favorites.

The best bloody mary in Grand Rapids: Sundance Grill

When a friend first told me about the BLT bloody mary at Sundance, my jaw may have dropped, like I had just learned about the moon landing. A bloody mary… with bacon in it?

Oh yeah, there’s bacon in there. There’s lettuce and tomatoes in there too. And it comes with a side of toast and mayo, so you can build yourself a BLT to munch on while you enjoy your bloody.

The BLT bloody mary at Sundance even comes with a sidecar 5 oz pour of beer.

The best build-your-own bloody mary bar: New Holland Brewing

I’ve enjoyed New Holland’s build-your-own bloody bar more times than I can count. It’s bloody mary bliss, with an array of meats, cheeses, olives, and loads of other goodies you can add to your bloody. You’re basically getting a charcuterie board plus a bloody mary.

Oh, and you get a nifty sidecar of New Holland beer along with your bloody mary. What else could you want?

Please note the BYO bar is only Saturday and Sunday at the Holland location. “The Knickerbocker” in GR does not have a BYO bloody bar as of this writing.

Infused bloody marys: Rockwell Republic

Rockwell Republic serves up a mean weekend bloody mary. Their mixer of choice is the delicious Zing Zang, and they infuse their vodkas with things like cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeno. The infused vodkas are so good you’ll want to try experimenting with infusing spirits at home.

The best dive bar bloody’s Birch Lodge

Birch Lodge is what I would affectionately call a “dive bar,” which means I’m a huge fan.  There are several other dive bars on Michigan St. if you’re looking to make the ultimate GR bar crawl.

Their bloody mary bar is everything you would expect from a world-class dive bar. Affordable, delicious, and unpretentious. Oh, there’s also a FREE TACO BAR.

Free tacos and a bloody mary bar? Sounds like an epic start to an epic weekend.

Best diner vibes in GR: Matchbox Diner

Another place that puts bacon in their bloodies. I guess the secret is out – bloody marys + bacon = satisfied customers.

Come for the incredible bloodies, and stay for some of the best diner food in Grand Rapids.

Matchbox Diner is in Grand Rapids’s always hip Eastown neighborhood, a quick five or ten-minute trek from downtown.

Best time-machine bloody mary: The Commons

Step down into The Commons, and you’ll feel like you’ve gone fifty years into the past. The only thing that’s missing is the shag carpet. I never thought a restaurant that looked like a classic Elton John music video would be one of GR’s hotspots, but here we are.

Their bloody mary is the real deal, made with vodka, Zing Zang, and served with a skewer of good stuff to munch on. Drink away, and enjoy the vintage furniture and vibe. Maybe you’ll be inspired to explore some thrift stores after.

Best classic bloody mary: San Chez Bistro

A classic bloody mary at a Grand Rapids classic, San Chez. They’ve been making the best tapas in the heart of downtown since 1997.

San Chez let’s you pick your spirit, so go nuts with tequila or whiskey. They add some pickle juice, your choice of bloody mary mix, and Worcestershire sauce, and you’re in bloody mary paradise.

The best bloody on Wealthy St.: The Winchester

The Winchester is one of the greatest spots in Grand Rapids because it feels like a neighborhood bar, boasts a plush interior that’s both classic and modern, and serves some of the best food in town.

Their weekend build-your-own bloody mary bar is not to be missed. How many BYO bloody bars are on this list, anyway? Grand Rapids, we are doing it RIGHT.

The best bloody Maria: MeXo

MeXo took the bloody mary game to new levels by swapping tequila for the traditional vodka. Since MeXo is an authentic Mexican place (one of the best in town), tequila in the bloody marys makes so much sense. Try one, and you might just taste your new favorite take on a bloody mary.

The best bloody by the convention center: SpeakEZ Lounge

If you’re in town for an event at the Devos convention center, the SpeakEZ lounge is a quick walk away, and they make a bloody mary that’s next level. You can even add a miller high life mini bottle as a sidecar for a buck (easiest decision ever?)
