The 9 Best Pizza Restaurants in Grand Rapids (Local Favorites)

best pizza in grand rapids
Just look at those amazing Quarantino’s squares in Grand Rapids, MI!

Friday night in our house means two things: pizza and a movie. And a glass of white wine for my wife and a whiskey neat for me. Ok, that’s four things. I’m a writer, not a mathematician.

Grand Rapids has hundreds of pizza joints, and I have heroically eaten thousands of slices of pizza to put together this definitive and comprehensive list of the best spots in town.

Tuck that napkin in your shirt, pull up a chair and get your parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes ready. It’s pizza night.

The best pizza restaurant in Grand Rapids: The Mitten Brewing

Located on a resurgent section of Leonard Street, The Mitten is next door to Long Road Distillery and kitty-corner to Two Scott’s BBQ. And I think they make the best pizza in the city.

Baked in a wood-fired oven, their pizzas have that delicious hint of wood smoke baked into the pie. My go-to pizza is The Heater, which has sausage, jalapenos, and banana peppers, but you can’t go wrong with a pizza flight (six small specialty pizzas).

Wash your pizza down with one of their craft beers. I’m fond of Country Strong IPA and the Triple Crown Brown.

P.S. – You might recognize The Mitten from our article about the best Italian Restaurants in Grand Rapids.

The best Detroit-style pizza in in Grand Rapids: Buddy’s Pizza

Buddy’s Pizza claims to be the first Detroit-style pizza place. If you’re new to Michigan, Detroit-style pizza is cooked in a square or rectangular pan and cut into square slices. The crust is thicker than traditional pizza, and the cast iron pan makes the crust extra crispy. Detroit lore says those original pans were foraged from automotive plants.

Authentic Detroit-style pizza is “built backwards,” meaning the toppings go onto the dough, then cheese is added, and finally, they top it with sauce. Yes, it sounds weird. But trust me, Detroit-style pizza is delicious, and Buddy’s does it better than anyone.

The best chain pizza in Grand Rapids: Jet’s

Jet’s might be the most consistent pizza place in the world. They’ve got pizza-making down to a science. Their pizza tastes the same every time you order it, right down to the caramelized crust.

They offer both traditional round pizzas and Detroit-style, deep-dish pizza. I’m here to tell you to order the Detroit-style pizza – it’s superb.

The best take-out pizza in Grand Rapids: Quarantino’s

Quarantino’s opened in the summer of 2020, hence the pandemic-inspired name. They’re in a prime spot on Lake Drive in the heart of Eastown. Quarantino’s serves up delicious, Detroit-style pizza.

Try the MC5 (with the “cup and char,” Detroit-style pepperonis). Your belly will thank you.

Please note that Quarantino’s is take-out only. If you don’t feel like dining at home, walk your pizza to Wilcox park and make it a picnic.

The best pizza in downtown Grand Rapids: Big O

I love the vibe at Big O. You have to walk down a half flight of stairs, then you’re seated partially underground. It feels like you’re in an Italian mob movie (There is a handicap-friendly entrance also available around the corner).

Big O (formerly Big O’s) is a bona fide Grand Rapids institution. They’ve been slinging pizzas since 1996 and have operated out of their current spot on Ottawa since 2006. That’s a long time in restaurant years, so you know you’ll get some delicious pie.

The best thin crust pizza in Grand Rapids: Fricano’s Pizza Restaurant

The first time I had Fricano’s, my brain almost exploded. I was a kid, and their thin-crust pizza was a revelation to me.

Fricano’s does thin crust better than anyone in town. It’s gloriously greasy and cheesy. Deliciousness is only a bite away.

Order their legendary pepperoni pizza for pizza nirvana. Just don’t tell your cardiologist.

The best 7 dollars you’ll ever spend: Harmony Brewing Company

Ok, I’m telling you this in secrecy. Pinky-swear, blood oath, cross your heart and hope to die, all that stuff – keep this special to yourself.

Harmony runs a pizza special every Tuesday, and you can score a cheese pizza for six bucks and a pepperoni pizza for seven bucks. And Harmony makes a mighty fine pizza.

You’ll have plenty of cash left over to try one of their craft beers (brewed in-house).

Not Tuesday? No problem! Harmony is good seven days a week. You just won’t be getting the best pizza deal in town.

The best premium pizza in Grand Rapids: Hall and Wealthy St. Bakeries

These bakeries are sisters, and the menus at each place are virtually identical.

Sidenote – their ham and cheese croissant is one of my favorite things to eat in the entire city!

And their pizza is also fantastic, wood-fired, and made with premium ingredients. Order the chicken pesto pizza and a glass of wine, grab a table, and you’ll feel like you’re eating at an Italian cafe.

The best pizza in East Grand Rapids: Big Bob’s Pizza

Billed as the “Cheers” of East Grand Rapids, Big Bob’s has been around forever. And that’s because they make excellent pizza.

Big Bob’s is within walking distance of Reed’s Lake, so you can make it a picnic and head over to Collin’s Park.

Or, you can enjoy your food inside. Big Bob’s has an expansive drink menu, and plenty of TVs, so it’s a great spot if you’re looking to watch a big game.
