Top 9 Best Burger Places in Wichita, KS

best burgers wichita ks

There is nothing quite like a burger craving: it hits you right in the stomach, and suddenly nothing matters more than securing a juicy, greasy, and terribly delicious burger and fries.

I come from a long line of meat eaters. And here’s the proof: my grandma believed the cure to a stomachache was a hamburger with mustard and pickles.

My many years chomping on burgers, stuffing my face with fries, and venturing into diners left-and-right finally has a purpose after all. I’m here to tell you about the best burgers in Wichita, and I’ve narrowed it down to eight places. You could hit these all in a week or two, if you’re as dedicated to burgers as I am.

So, sit down and grab a napkin, ‘cause I can guarantee you’ll be drooling by the end of this. It’s time to find your next favorite burger joint. And don’t forget the fries!

Dempsey’s Burger Pub

Not to be confused with Dempsey’s Biscuit Co (though they’re run by the same company and equally delicious), Dempsey’s Burger Pub stands out in the Wichita burger scene. Every time I go to Dempsey’s, I run into someone I know. I’m telling you—Wichitans flock there.

For me, a burger is only as good as the fries by its side. And Dempsey’s never disappoints in either category. Whether you’re in the mood for Wagyu beef, a salmon burger, truffle fries, or duck fat (!!) fries, Dempsey’s has got you covered. Plus, they’ve got an amazing atmosphere and root beer floats. Can it get any better than that?

TJ’s Burger House

Oh, Delano. Honestly, Delano might as well be the heart and soul of Wichita. And TJ’s fits in there beautifully.

TJ’s Burger House has a retro, old-diner feel, featuring that iconic checkered tile. TJ’s Burger House is easily the most family-friendly, welcoming, and hospitable restaurant in Delano—hands down. They’re always packed, with kids guzzling chocolate shakes and the smell of fried food in the air. Those juicy patties are something else; certainly not going to help your arteries, but it’s good for the soul.

The Anchor

The Anchor hosts an interesting crowd. Whether you’re a hipster, tattoo junkie, burger connoisseur, or fresh off your bar crawl, the Anchor has a seat for you.

The Anchor is known for their quirky take on burgers, such as their Haystack or Burn, Baby, Burn. I myself tried their Haystack many moons ago and, whew, what a rush. Dripping cheese, heavenly fries, and a burger on buttered, thick Texas toast. It’ll fill you up, that’s for sure. Be sure to check out their fried pickles next time you’re there too.

Five Guys

Okay, okay, I know Five Guys is a chain, and you can get it in just about every state in the U.S. But I still firmly believe they deserve a mention. Their burgers are so dang good, but not even those mouth-watering patties can top their fries. Amazing. Huge portion sizes, salt on your fingers, the smell of peanuts and grease in the air. I mean, it’s a classic American meal! Can’t go wrong with Five Guys. Ye ol’ dependable.

Fizz Burger & Bottles

As you might imagine, Fizz Burger & Bottles is known for their unique selection of bottled sodas and beers, but they’re so much more than that. Fizz makes just about everything from scratch, whether it be the pickles, pecan dipping sauce, or garlic aioli.

Their sweet potato fries are thick, seasoned beautifully, and I always have extra to take home from a regular serving. I personally recommend their mushroom swiss burger; those greasy, sweet onions always hit home for me. Grab a beer, soda, and some of their homemade dipping sauces, and you’ll be in heaven for a meal.

Walt’s All-American Bar & Grill

I’ve spent many an evening in Walt’s with friends and family, splitting burgers dripping in mustard and salty fries. My devotion is real; one of the best holiday gifts I’ve ever received was a gift card to Walt’s.

Walt’s remains a lively bar since its founding in 1947. My grandma used to tell stories of late-night trips to Walt’s for burgers and beer after sending the kids to bed. Needless to say, not much has changed.

With regular karaoke nights and WSU game day parties, you know Walt’s is always bustling. Head over to Walt’s for a delicious, thin-patty burger, and you’ll be sure to meet a lifelong friend or drinking partner, dealer’s choice.

Special Mentions: Wichita’s Chains

That’s right—not only did we create Pizza Hut, but we also made Spangles, Freddy’s, and NuWay Burgers. Go off, Wichita!

Here’s some more info on three famous burger chains that you can thank us for…

Spangles is a well-known, Wichita-based chain that exists only in Kansas. Each restaurant is decked from head-to-toe in Elvis statues, retro murals, and neon lights. It’s certainly an experience.

My grandfather and father used to take me to Spangles all the time. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s where I stopped for lunch when I was taking my permit test. Definitely a Kansas classic. As they say, Spangles, it just tastes better!

Freddy’s was founded by three brothers who named this popular restaurant chain after their father who served in World War II. Freddy was an American hero, and his legacy lives on today across the country.

Freddy’s is best known for their thin steakburgers and custard, but I love their crispy, heavily salted fries the best. All Wichita high schoolers head to Freddy’s after a football game and dip those fries into chocolate shakes. Believe me, it’s good.

NuWay Burgers

NuWay’s will forever hold a special place in my heart. They were founded in 1930 and remain one of the oldest Wichita restaurants to date! Their crumbly burgers are well-known around town and remain the unbeatable best when it comes to texture.

With four locations, NuWay is accessible for all and a relic of Wichita’s history. Even if you’re not a burger fan, you gotta give their crumbly burgers a try. They’re one-of-a-kind, I promise!
