best pizza wichita kansas

Few know this, but Wichita is actually the birthplace of true, American pizza.

Yep, Pizza Hut, the greatest and oldest pizza chain in this country, was founded right here in Doo-Dah City. 😜

Pizza Hut has since become the largest pizza chain in the world, so I think it’s only fair to say that pizza was invented in Kansas?

With such a great history to uphold, Wichita is now known for excellent pizza, ranging from wood oven pizzas, Chicago pizzas, and New York-style thin slices. Although Wichita was Pizza Hut’s birthplace, we have now outgrown our predecessor.

The all-around family favorite: Knolla’s Pizza

I grew up in Wichita, which means I grew up playing pinball machines in the back of a Knolla’s while my family waited for our order. This lovely, local chain is the go-to takeout for families, parties, and Sunday football games. Knolla’s is best known for their classics like cheese or pepperoni, but their secret specialties are the real highlight.

I have probably ingested more Knolla’s Cheeseburger pizza than any other kind, and I have no regrets. With tangy mustard, dill pickles, ground beef, and red onion, it is truly like no other. Can you really say you’ve visited Wichita without having tried Knolla’s pizza at least once?

Best Italian pizza & best vegan pizza: Piatto Neapolitan Pizzeria

When I say this pizza is amore, I mean this pizza is amore. As a mostly plant-based eater, I have scoured the Midwest searching for the best vegan/vegetarian eats. Never would I have thought that the best vegan pizza would be right in the heart of my own hometown!

Piatto Neapolitan Pizzeria is most well-known for its authentic, Italian pizza. In fact, their head chefs studied in Naples under the tutelage of Enzo Coccia. (That’s about as authentic as it gets.) Alongside their wood-stove trio de carne and milano pizzas, you can also find a vegan mushroom medley, margherita, and francesca!

If you’re craving perfectly chewy, Italian pizza but don’t want the following stomachache, Piatto Neapolitan Pizzeria is absolutely the place for you. And that marinara sauce? Unbeatable.

Best chain: Il Vicino Wood Oven Pizza

With locations in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, it’s no wonder Il Vicino has become a favorite amongst all Wichitans. Known for their fast-dining experience and perfectly charred Italian-style pizza, Il Vicino is a must-eat in Bradley Fair.

Il Vicino is known for their giant menu and wood-fired pizzas, as well they should be. Although customers order at the counter, your glass will never be empty, and waiters will always check in to make sure everything is alright.

Best variety: Ziggy’s Pizza

Ziggy’s Pizza is locally famous for a reason. And that reason? Variety, baby! Although they’ve got your classic pepperoni and veggie pizzas, they’ve also got specials like the Kickin’ Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Sanibel Islander, and Mamacita’s Taco Pizza.

Square-cut slices make this pizza easy to share and great for those who hate crusts. Ziggy’s is always hopping, filled to the brim with hooting and hollering customers. If you’re looking for a good time and a great bite, head down to Clifton Square and get ready to have some fun.

Best New York style slices: Picasso’s Pizzeria

Whether you fold your pizza, cut into it with a fork and knife, or bite straight into it, you will be welcomed here. These 26” pizzas are baked in a brick oven, perfectly thin and cheesy. You can order by the slice, whether that be custom or one of their specialty slices, cutely named the Slices of Art. Or, if you’re hungry enough, you can get an entire giant pie.

Picasso’s offers over 30 fresh toppings, and 14 Slices of Art. Although their giant cheese slices are out of this world, I recommend ordering a Slice of Art, because these guys know what they’re doing. A family favorite is the Spin Dip, featuring artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, cream cheese, mozzarella, spinach, and red onion.

And, if their pizzas aren’t enough for you, they also have the most exceptional salads. I might have to head over there for lunch today…

Best supreme pizza: Angelo’s

Now, Angelo’s has a different name for their Supreme Pizza, but never fear, it’s still the best in town. The Angelo’s “Truly Deluxe” pizza has homemade Italian sausage, pepperoni, spicy ground beef, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and, most importantly, fresh mozzarella. Is it just me, or are you drooling too?

And if that wasn’t enough, Angelo’s has an incredibly broad menu suitable for every picky eater in your family or friend group. From meatball subs to manicotti to shrimp scampi, this menu is sure to please. And did I mention there’s a vegetarian option? The meatless wonder pizza features kalamata olives, mushrooms, onions, and mozzarella.

After being open for 40+ years, Angelo’s closed much to the dismay of all Wichitans. But thanks to the combined efforts of Denise Neil, the food editor of the Wichita Eagle, and one of Angelo’s most devoted customers, the founder’s son was able to raise enough money to reopen. The proof is in the pie!
